Twisted Taters

Does traditional Japanese bonsai seem like a lot of work for a little Mr. Myagi-style tranquility? The Art of the Bonsai Potato Kit (available at www.bonsaipotato.com) promises "Zen—without the wait!" The kit—which pokes more than a little fun at a culture that worships cell phones and yoga, SUVs and oxygen bars—includes a plastic "altar" and "non-reflective irregular geo-particulate support medium" (black gravel) on which to display your sprouting spud. An owner's manual features such classic techniques as wire training but warns that they "could seriously undermine your inner-harmony-in-ten-minutes-a-week goal." And should the potato's brief life span be too short for your sensitive soul, try the chapter on "letting go."
